Mairead Gorman Obituary: We are saddened to announce the passing of Sr. Mairead Gorman, MMM, a devoted missionary who peacefully departed from this world at Aras Mhuire on the night of February 11th, 2024.

Let us take a moment to reflect on the remarkable life of this compassionate soul. Full Name: Sr. Mairead Gorman, MMM Born: February 19, 1931, Armagh, Northern Ireland Died: February 11th, 2024, Aras Mhuire

Sr. Mairead Gorman’s journey began in Armagh, Northern Ireland, where she was born as Bridget in February 1931. Her early education focused on secretarial skills, and she worked as a shorthand typist and telephonist in Armagh for seven years after completing secondary school.

In 1957, she decided to devote her life to missionary work and joined the MMM. After her initial religious formation, Sr. Mairead professed her vows in 1959 and adopted the name Mairead. Given her secretarial skills, she served in the convent office in Drogheda for the first decade of her missionary life.

In 1968, Sr. Mairead embarked on her first overseas assignment in Uganda. After three years, she expressed a desire to study nursing, which led her to London for nursing courses and midwifery studies in Drogheda.

Armed with these qualifications, she dedicated herself to healthcare in Tanzania for two years before spending over two decades in Ethiopia. Sr. Mairead’s heart remained in Ethiopia, where she not only contributed to nursing in Mikke, Awasa, and Dadim but also assumed leadership roles. She stayed in Ethiopia until the MMM withdrawal from the country in 2010.
