Alan “Mushroom” Kapuler Obituary: The world of organic gardening and crop biodiversity lost a true champion with the passing of Alan “Mushroom” Kapuler, PhD, on November 11, 2023.
A lifetime member of Seed Savers Exchange, Alan dedicated his life to preserving the genetic diversity of crops and fostering sustainable, non-violent, and organic food systems. His legacy lives on through his extensive seed collection, his contributions to public-domain plant breeding, and his co-founding of organizations like Peace Seeds and Seeds of Change.
Alan’s journey in the world of science and agriculture began with academic excellence. Graduating first in his class at Yale, he continued to pursue knowledge and earned a doctorate in molecular biology from Rockefeller University.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Howard Temin, a Nobel Prize-winning researcher, Alan delved into the intricacies of molecular biology. His collaboration with Dr. Sarangamat Gurusiddiah involved conducting numerous analyses for free amino acids in organically grown flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
The turning point in Alan’s career came with the co-founding of Peace Seeds alongside his wife, Linda, and their friend Alan Venet. This venture laid the foundation for the groundbreaking company Seeds of Change, which became a leading force in the organic and heirloom seed movements.
Alan’s commitment to organic gardening and biodiversity was evident in the over 15,000 seeds he personally stewarded, with more than 140 varieties donated to the SSE Collection with Linda.
A quote from Alan encapsulates his philosophy: “The core of a non-violent society and the path to planetary peace is a non-violent, sustainable, organic food system.” This belief became the driving force behind his life’s work.
Alan understood the vital connection between a sustainable food system and global peace. His dedication to preserving the gene pool of the planet’s food crops reflects a forward-looking mindset, ensuring adaptable varieties for future generations.
