Known for his talents on stage and in the classroom, Ayden was a shining star at the STEM Academy’s Black Box Productions, where he was celebrated for his brilliance as an actor, technician, student, and friend. His passion for the stage, cheerleading, and sour patch kids endeared him to those around him, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
According to the Savannah Police Department, Ayden Griffin was riding his bike on the sidewalk near the intersection of Abercorn Street and DeRenne Avenue when he was struck by a car that ran a red light. The driver of the car, a 23-year-old man, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and running a red light. Ayden was rushed to the Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Ayden Griffin’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and support from the community. Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil at the STEM Academy on March 1, 2024, to honor his memory and express their condolences to his family. Many of his classmates, teachers, and friends shared their stories and memories of Ayden, highlighting his positive attitude, his kindness, and his talent. Some of his fellow actors and cheerleaders performed songs and routines in tribute to him. A memorial fund has been set up to help his family with the funeral expenses and to support the Black Box Productions program.
Ayden Griffin was born on June 15, 2009, in Savannah, GA, to Kelly Kessinger and James Griffin. He had two sisters, Ava and Ella, and a brother, Noah. He attended the STEM Academy, where he excelled academically and artistically. He was a member of the Black Box Productions, where he acted in several plays and musicals, such as The Lion King, Hamilton, and Matilda. He also helped with the technical aspects of the shows, such as lighting, sound, and stage design. He was a talented singer, dancer, and musician, playing the piano, guitar, and drums. He was also a cheerleader for the Savannah Sharks, where he showcased his athleticism and spirit. He loved sour patch kids, video games, Marvel movies, and Harry Potter. He was a loyal friend, a loving son, and a caring brother. He had a bright future ahead of him and a dream of becoming a Broadway star.
