Rodgerick O’Neal faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with the killing of Loyce Wright

Chicago police announced during a Tuesday morning news conference that a suspect has been charged and apprehended following a suburban exchange of gunfire with law enforcement in connection with the killing of a security guard at a West Side Family Dollar store last week.

According to CPD, police were pursuing a lead on Saturday, the day after a suburban resident and father of four was fatally shot inside the Family Dollar store on Friday afternoon.

According to police reports, authorities identified a suspect involved in the shooting on the West Side and located the individual in Dolton.

CPD stated that officers and SWAT teams were present in the 15200-block of South Meadow Lane at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Saturday. An exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspect and law enforcement officers.

Subsequently, officers apprehended the suspect in the 15200-block of Diekman Court in Dolton and recovered a firearm from the scene.

The shooting prompted a significant police presence, with Illinois State Police involved and the neighborhood cordoned off.

There were no reported injuries in the incident. Rodgerick Oneal, aged 36, from Maywood, faces charges including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery of a peace officer, resisting arrest, and having an outstanding warrant in connection with the Dolton shootout.

Oneal faces charges of first-degree murder and murder with a strong likelihood of causing death or injury in relation to the incident at the Austin Family Dollar store, occurring in the 5400-block of West Chicago Avenue shortly before 1:40 p.m. on Friday.

The victim, Loyce Wright, aged 43, from Hanover Park, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and subsequently passed away.

On Tuesday, authorities stated that the suspect had previously worked at the store and had a history of criminal activity.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is conducting an investigation into the Dolton shooting. The officers implicated will be assigned to standard administrative duties for a 30-day period.
