As the daughter of George Alfred Sweder and Eunice (Williams) Sweder, Carolyn grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where her early experiences laid the groundwork for her future pursuits in education and service.
Throughout her academic career, Carolyn displayed an unwavering dedication to learning, earning her Bachelor’s degree from Augustana College, followed by a Master’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Her thirst for knowledge propelled her to pursue a second Master’s degree in Counseling from Governors State University, demonstrating her commitment to both the sciences and the humanities. This extensive educational background provided Carolyn with the tools to make significant contributions in both the medical field and mental health services, where she could touch the lives of many.
Carolyn’s personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. She found her soul mate in Janardanan Pillai, whom she met during her studies at the University of Illinois. Their love story was one of deep connection and shared values, culminating in two official ceremonies to honor their marriage—one in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and another in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. This unique blend of cultures enriched their family life and laid a foundation of love and respect for their two sons, whom Carolyn raised in Flossmoor, Illinois. For much of her adult life, Carolyn dedicated herself to her family, nurturing her sons with love and instilling in them the values of education, compassion, and service.
For the last seven years of her life, Carolyn made La Porte her home, where she continued to engage with her community and build lasting friendships. Her career as a clinical microbiologist at the University of Chicago Hospitals marked the beginning of a life dedicated to the sciences. During her time in this esteemed institution, Carolyn played a crucial role in various research projects and clinical studies, contributing to advancements in microbiology and patient care. Following her tenure at the University of Chicago, Carolyn transitioned to a rewarding career as a counselor in Tinley Park, Illinois. This gathering will provide an opportunity for loved ones to share their memories, express their condolences, and celebrate the life of a remarkable woman. The celebration of Carolyn’s life will take place on Saturday, October 5, at 10 AM at the Presbyterian Church of La Porte, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory in a meaningful way. Following the service, Carolyn will be cremated, and her ashes will be placed in the columbarium at the Presbyterian Church of La Porte, ensuring that her spirit remains a part of the community she cherished.
