42-year-old Shawn Karr killed in Groveland officer-involved shooting

Tuolumne County Sheriff detectives have identified the man who died in the deputy-involved shooting as 42-year-old Shawn Karr of Coulterville. Next of kin has been notified.

Our priority remains conducting a thorough investigation. In order to maintain the integrity of the investigation, it would be premature to release additional case details at this time.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office has cleared the area of Merrell Road near Harper Road in Groveland following a deputy-involved shooting last night. This is an active investigation.

Tuolumne County detectives are still on the scene of the deputy-involved shooting to investigate, process and collect evidence. Our priority is to conduct a thorough investigation with assistance from the California Department of Justice. No deputy sheriff’s have sustained injury as a result of this incident. We ask that our community stay clear of the area while investigators do their work. We will provide updates as the investigation progresses.

Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in the area of Merrell Road near Harper Road in Groveland. On February 27th at approximately 11:05 in the evening, a deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle with an unreadable license plate. The deputy contacted two men in the vehicle. During his investigation, one suspect fled on foot and the deputy ran after the suspect. During the foot pursuit, the suspect produced a firearm and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Right now, investigators are on scene.
